Sapa Overview:

Sapa situated on above 1600km from sea level in the North- West of Viet Nam, belong to Lao Cai Province, near the border of Chinese. It’s around 36km from Lao Cai province to Sapa and around 376 km from Ha Noi to the North – west.
Sapa was found during the inspection about the hill tribes under the French colonial period. The first exploring group came to Lao Cai on 1898.
In 1903, during working on information for the map, those explorers found the plain of Lo Suoi Tung and Sa Pa Village that was marked for the born of Sapa Town.
Main hill tribes in Sapa are H’mong, Tay , Dao Do , Giay, Xa Pho. And now, Kinh people moved there a lot for doing business as Sapa is on development as a special tourist attraction.
Sapa surrounds by Hoang Lien Son mountain range and the famous Fansipan summit that creates very nice climate around the year. It is Spring in the morning that is around 15oC, warmer at noon as Summer with light sunshine and breezes , foggy in the evening as Fall and Winter season at night. Sapa is one of very rarely places in Viet Nam where it was snowing sometimes. In 1971 – 2011, there are 15 snowing times in Sapa. The strongest one is on the year 1968, it was snowed from 3:00 AM to 14:00 PM with 20cm of snow.
Nowadays, Sapa attracts a lot of tourists by its beautiful scenes, nice climate but the most attraction is the tribes of people. Many special tours for trekking and homestay offer to travelers a chance to meet , stay together and learn about the hill tribes living.

Fansipan Mountain

Fansipan is a highest mountain in Viet Nam and in Indochina. It is located in Lao Cai Province in the Northwest of Viet Nam at 3,143 meters above the sea level. Just 9km from Sapa Town to Hoang Lien Son range, that adventure tourists can take an adventure trip to the Fansipan summit.
Fansipan is dubbed "the Roof of Indochina"; it is to be approved as one of the very few eco-tourist spots of Vietnam, with about 2,024 floral varieties and 327 faunal species. The topography of Fansipan is varied. Muong Hoa Valley, at the lowest altitude (950 to 1 000m), is created by a narrow strip of land at the base on the east side of the mountain. It can be climbed in a steep and fairly strenuous hike.

It was a time, talking about Sapa, people thinking about the Love market!
Love Market is very lovely feature of the hill tribe young people in Sapa for every Saturday night. That was the place for them to find out their partners, to love and get married. Normally the young hill tribe gathered there and found out their lovers by singing a song. Girls often sang a song but stayed in the dark. Young man will try to find out that girl. They stayed there for singing and dancing into the early hours.
Unfortunately, things changed by the time! The Love market is still existed but a lot of changes nowadays! Many Kinh people are there as vendors, some hill tribe people be there for asking some money from tourists, young hill tribe people still there and looking for their partners but not by the old romantic way. However, still see here and there, the remains of their beautiful culture.



Sapa Market

Sapa market is located right in the center of Sapa Town. As other market, this place supplies food and things for local people. Most of the vendors are Kinh and hill tribe people. Kinh people sell “ imported “ products from abroad or from other places around the country. Hill tribe people sell their special products from the nature or hand-made.
The difference with other market is the colorful of their clothes. Most of hill tribe people wearing their traditional clothes for going out that made a beautiful picture that you can see everywhere in Sapa.



Ham Rong Mountain

Ham Rong ( Dragon Mouth ) Mountain situated right in the Town, next to Sapa market.
Ham Rong flower garden was set up on the top of this mountain. The artists built it up but kept the existing beauty of nature as a background, they planted alternative here and there many kinds of flowers, bonsais, trees and be taken care by a group of skillful art-planters.
Walking up some steps, open view, that is the Orchid Garden, the Western flowers Garden then Japanese Cherry flowers Garden…
On the summit of Ham Rong mountain ( not very height), it was built as an observed station that tourists can see the views of Sapa Town from height or Muong Hoa, Sa Pa, Ta Phin villages which opened then hidden through the clouds from far.



Cat Cat Village

Cat Cat is a Mong’ tribe village where is around 2km far from the Sapa Town. That is one of the most attractive places for visiting in Sapa.
People in Cat Cat village preserve their traditional occupations as weaving and dyeing or the jewelries hand-made from silver or bronze.
Thac Bac ( Silver waterfall) is one of the beautiful scenes in Cat Cat village with the water dropping from 200m height that is twinkling under the sunshine as silver.



Lao Chai Village

About 7km from Sapa, Lao Chai village is located in a green valley surrounding by mountain and hill grass, that is the residential area of black H’mong Ethnic group . It’s only a short walk from the Town to Lao Chai village that very easy for travelers to reach.
Like most of other hill tribe people, H’mong people are very kindly and simple. Their houses look like the same in construction. Overnight in Lao Chai village to learn experience about the H’Mong culture through their daily activities, their songs that should be a good choice for whom to have a short Sapa trip.



Ta Van Village

From Lao Chai, travelers can get to Ta Van village by keeping trekking around the bottom of Sapa valley. This is supposed to be the most beautiful in the area.
Ta Van is a quiet area for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful nature. That is the residential area of Giay people. Hill tribe people are very famous for their hospitality, kindly and honesty.
Trip to Ta Van village, travelers enjoy the beautiful landscape and the peaceful in mind that can’t describe by words.



Bac Ha Market

From Lao Cai Town then drive for around 76km more to the Northeast that is the special Bac Ha Market which only gathered on the Sunday morning.
This market is a place for exchanging local foods to other foods from other provinces and also is a witness for the meeting of several cultures of local hill tribes. All people who go down to this market wearing their colorful dresses and that custom is still existed until now.
There divided the market to many parts such as foods, weaving product, poultries ( Pig, chickens, horses..) and groceries areas…Specially, Bac Ha is a place for the young people meeting together after a hard working week.



Can Cau Market

Can Cau Market

Can Cau market gathered every Saturday morming at Can Cau, it is around 20km to the North of Bac Ha Town. It is beautiful landscapes on the way to get there. There are thousands of Flower H’mong gathering and trading farm products and colourful clothes in natural surroundings. It is no doubt one of the most attractive places for photo hunters in Vietnam.
