Ninh Binh Overview: Hoa Lu is the name of a district in Ninh Binh Province. In 1977, Hoa Lu was reset with its old name and well known with the natural landscapes such as Trang An, Tam Coc, Bich Dong caves. It also was known as an old Capital as it was a capital under the Dinh, Le and Ly Dynasties from 968 to 1010. There still existed many relics those be preserved since 1000 years ago. Ninh Binh nowadays is one of tourist attractions in the North. Located around 100 km from Ha Noi to the South, it can offer one day trip for tourist. For people who want to pass night to enjoy the nature, there are from mini Hotels to Resorts with comfortable facilities. With its nature with nice view along the river and many caves, Ninh Binh was known as a second Ha Long in land.

Tourist Attractions in Ninh Binh

Tam Cốc Caves

“Tam” is three, “ Coc” is cave.
Tam Coc is the three caves those called “ Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba”. All of those three caves were created by Ngo Dong River as it went through the mountain.
The first cave ( Hang Ca) with 127m long and goes through a big mountain, Its gate with 20m wide. Nice climate inside with stalactites go to many shapes.
The second cave ( Hang Hai): around 1 km from the Hang Ca, with 60m long and many strange shaped of stalactites from its ceiling.
The third cave is smaller.
Embarking a small boat at a pier, riding on Ngo Dong River along the field, circling the cliffs of mountain, through the “tunnel” that made by mountain.

Bích Động Cave

Bich Dong is situated around 2km from the Tam Coc pier. Bich means “ jade" and Dong is cave . It was named by Nguyen Nhiem in 1773. Nguyen Nhiem was a general under the Le Dynasty and was father of the Great Poet Nguyen Du. Bich Dong was known as the second wonderful cave in the South after Huong Tich cave in the North at that time.
Bich Dong Pagoda is an ancient Pagoda which was attached with the mountain rock, strongly Asian style. In 1740-1786, this pagoda was upgraded and extended to three Pagodas on three levels of that mountain.
“ Xuyen thuy” cave as a tunnel but stayed in the water with 350m long and snaked from East to West. “ Xuyen Thuy” means to go through the water. The average wide of the cave is 6m, the largest wide is 15m. The gate of “ Xuyen thuy” cave is in the back of the mountain, in front of the gate to jade cave, so tourist can take the trip through Xuyen Thuy cave , when this short trip end, tourist can continue to visit Jade Cave and Bich Dong Pagoda.

Thung Nham Sanctuary

This also is an eco-tour by boat of Tam Coc- Bich Dong tourist site. The sanctuary is located in Hai Nham village, Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu District and about 2km road to Bich Dong Pagoda.
By the tiny boat, tourists will go along the river and enjoy the beautiful scenes of nature, water field, caves before arrived the sanctuary.
The sanctuary is an immense area with water and trees which covered with the white color by thousands of birds.

Thung Nắng

Walking around 500m from Dinh Cac ( Tam Coc) pier, that is Thach Bich pier if tourist wants to go to Thung Nang. That is 3km route on the river. The water covered all the field along. The same as other routes in Hoa Lu, Thung Nang possesses mountain, river and caves but still keep the pristine nature. That is relevant for whom whose likes quiet and the nature without human interfered.

Phat Diem Church

Phat Diem Church ( or Phat Diem stone Church) locates at Phat Diem Town, Kim Son District, Ninh Binh Province. About 120km from Ha Noi to the South. Phat Diem Church is known as the most beautiful Church in Viet Nam.
Phat Diem Church was built at 1875 and completed at 1898. That is a Catholic Church but was built by the traditional Vietnamese Temples and Pagodas style.
